On Sept 11, 2001, two of Groveton's family members perished in the Pentagon attack:
Michael "Scott" Lamana, A Navy Lieutenant and Flight Officer. By day, he helped monitor the operations of the navy's global fleet from his post in the Pentagon's navy Command Center. By night, he attended classes at the University of Maryland, expecting to receive his MBA in December. Scott grew up in Baton Rouge, LA and graduated from Louisiana State University in 1992. Scott's father said of him, "He loved his job. He loved the military."
Major W. Cole Hogan Jr. served in the Army for 21 years. He received his commission in 1981 and joined the Georgia Army National Guard as a Rifle and Mortar Platoon Leader. Subsequent assignments inlcuded 19th Special Air Force Group; Colorado Army National Guard, 20th Special Forces Group, Alabama Army National Guard; accepted an active duty appointment as Captain in 1993. He served with the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Washington State, then as Commander, Special Forces Instructor Detachment in Panama. He then joined the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans at the Pentagon. Cole's father said of him, "Cole loved the army...". The Collard Street families miss Cole very much - saying "hello" to us all while riding his bicycle and working on his garden, trading plants and advice and his cheerful and positive manner.
On June 14, 2003, the Groveton Civic Association dedicated a Yoshino Cherry Tree and a Remembrance Garden in the memory of Cole Hogan and Scott Lamana followed by a picnic:
